Embarking on a journey to the Ajanta and Ellora Caves from Mumbai is a rite of passage for history buffs and architecture enthusiasts alike. Located near the city of Aurangabad (Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar), these UNESCO World Heritage sites represent the pinnacle of ancient Indian rock-cut architecture. Ajanta features 29 Buddhist cave temples dating from the 2nd century BCE, famous for their vibrant frescoes and serene Buddha statues. Ellora, a short drive away, showcases a harmonious blend of 34 Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain caves, including the mind-boggling Kailasa Temple—the largest monolithic structure in the world. Tours from Mumbai typically range from whirlwind same-day flight excursions to immersive 6-day cultural odysseys that include stops at the Lonar Meteor Lake and the 'Mini Taj' (Bibi Ka Maqbara).

Real experiences from real travelers
The 3-day tour from Mumbai was perfectly paced. Seeing the Kailasa Temple in person at Ellora is a life-changing experience. Our driver was exceptional.
Booked the flight-inclusive day trip. While it's a long day, the efficiency was amazing. The guide at Ajanta knew every detail of the frescoes.
Highly recommend the 4-day option. It gave us time to see Bibi Ka Maqbara as well. The rock-cut architecture is superior to anything I've seen in Europe.
We traveled as a family. The AC car was comfortable for the long drive from Mumbai, and the homestay option was a wonderful cultural touch.
Don't miss this. We did the 3-day tour with the Sula Vineyard stop in Nashik. It was the perfect blend of history and relaxation.
The art in Ajanta is so well preserved. Our guide was very patient with our photography questions. The booking process through the platform was very easy.
I was worried about the distance from Mumbai, but the flight package made it so easy. Ellora is a marvel of engineering. Well worth the price.
The tour operator was punctual and the 4-star hotel in Aurangabad was very high quality. The Jain caves at Ellora were a hidden highlight.
Everything you need to know for your journey
No. Ajanta Caves are closed on Mondays, and Ellora Caves are closed on Tuesdays. Most tours are scheduled to accommodate these closures.
A drive from Mumbai to Aurangabad (the base city) takes approximately 7 to 8 hours depending on traffic and road conditions.
If you have limited time, a 1-hour flight from Mumbai to Aurangabad is highly recommended. If you want to see the countryside and stop at places like Nashik or Shirdi, a private car tour is better.
The best time to visit is from October to March when the weather is cool and pleasant. The monsoon season (June to September) is also beautiful as the landscape turns lush and green.
While possible via a same-day flight tour, it is very rushed as the caves are 100km apart. A 2 or 3-day trip is highly recommended to fully appreciate the sites.
There are basic restaurants near the entrances of both sites. Most multi-day tours include stops at better-quality hotels or local restaurants in Aurangabad city.
Photography is generally allowed, but the use of flash is strictly prohibited inside Ajanta Caves to protect the ancient frescoes. Tripods may require special permission.
Wear comfortable walking shoes with good grip, as there are many stairs and uneven surfaces. Dress modestly as these are religious sites; light, breathable cotton clothing is best.
This varies by tour. Many premium packages include 'skip-the-line' tickets, while more budget-friendly car-and-driver tours may require you to pay the nominal entry fee at the gate.
